This new book aims at investigating the sustainability dimension of the EU’s external action. With the increasing external activity of the European Union, calls to ensure that ‘sustainability’ is part of the EU’s external relation with third states and other international organisations have become louder. The EU Treaties also call for ‘sustainable development’ in several provisions and Articles 3(5) and 21 TEU directly relate this to the Union’s relations with the wider world. In the TFEU, Articles 11 and 191 provide that ‘Environmental protection requirements must be integrated into the definition and implementation of the Union’s policies and activities, in particular with a view to promoting sustainable development’ and with a view to ainstreaming environmental aspects throughout the Union’s policies.
